Communities Gearing Up For Largest King Day of Service Ever

Everybody can be great, because everybody can serve. Visit MLKDay.gov.

Washington, DC—With the annual Martin Luther King Day of Service just days away, communities across the country are planning a record number of projects and activities to honor the slain civil rights leader on Monday, January 15. For the first time, service projects are scheduled in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, with nearly 1,500 projects open for volunteer sign up at http://www.mlkday.gov.

"Participating in community service projects on King Day creates a living memorial to this national hero, and we hope that millions of Americans will get involved in the King Day of Service," said David Eisner, CEO of the Corporation for National and Community Service, the federal agency charged by Congress with overseeing the annual service effort. "Throughout his lifetime, Dr. King was dedicated to making our country a better place for all citizens. There is no better way to honor him than by continuing his life’s work."

Many nonprofit organizations in the Tampa Bay area are planning events to commemorate the day. On the national web site information is available on events in Bradenton, Clearwater, Pinellas Park and St. Petersburg.

In St. Petersburg the day will be celebrated in Bartlett Park. Crime watch volunteers will go out to canvas the neighborhood to give information to residents on upcoming events and on community policing. The group has identified the need to tell community members about the changes in this service and to get out the new phone number.

Also at the resource center: Fish Fry on Friday January 19th 3-6pm. Your participation is welcome.

This center began as a AmeriCorps*VISTA project 11 years ago and has been maintained by neighborhood residents ever since. If you can help us walk door to door and get out our newsletter please meet us at NHS at 10:00 a.m. on Monday. We will go out for about 2 hours and have time to enjoy the parade. NHS is on 1600 MLK, Jr Street.
You can also pick up flyers or arrange to have some brought to you if you can go out at another time.
